By the Last Man

Tobias Stavngaard Sextet, 2023

"By the Last Man" is the second album by Tobias Stavngaard Sextet. It was released on October 27th, 2023.

On this release, the composer and bandleader, Tobias Stavngaard, has found inspiration in the concept of universal history (a particular type of historiography that aims to write the collective world history of humanity as a coherent narrative). Philosophers and historians in this field have been raising questions since ancient times about whether human history follows a specific direction, whether human history has an ending (in a socio-cultural context rather than an apocalyptic one), and whether there exists a final and universal form of human social organization. The subject is current and politically charged, but the composer has focused solely on the philosophical core of the theme.

The album has gained wide recognition by being selected as the 'album of the week' on Danish radio station 'P8 jazz' and receiving great reviews. Michael Westmore from ‘Jazz Daily’ wrote that “what sets the Tobias Stavngaard Sextet apart is their ability to seamlessly blend their individual strengths into a cohesive musical narrative. The compositions are marked by intricate arrangements and a deep sense of musicality, showcasing the ensemble’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of contemporary jazz.” He added that “this release cements the band’s position as innovators in the world of contemporary jazz, promising an exciting future for this talented ensemble.”

The cover art for the album and the singles was made by the Danish artist Jonathan Einfeldt. It was crafted specifically for the purpose of complementing the music and creating a consistent theme and atmosphere surrounding the album.

This release cements the band’s position as innovators in the world of contemporary jazz, promising an exciting future for this talented ensemble.
